Ganesh Acharya has spent more than three decades shaping the way Hindi film songs move. Now he has turned the camera on himself. On Sunday, Acharya unveiled the trailer for Ganesh: Dust to Stardust, a biographical drama that traces his journey from humble beginnings to National Award-winning choreographer. The film is scheduled to open in theatres on December 11.
A life told through dance and adversity
Written and directed by Acharya, the film follows the sacrifices, struggle and determination behind a career built on song-and-dance spectacle. The trailer mixes dance sequences with emotionally charged moments, signalling a personal story rather than a showreel. Acharya said the film is built around the belief that everyone has the right to dream, but that dreams do not come true without hard work, sacrifice and persistence.
The cast includes Shivanshu Soni, Alok Shaw, Sukanya Kalan and Sakshi Pawaskar. Acharya’s daughter Soundarya Acharya has produced the film and said the story is about believing in a dream when circumstances make it appear impossible. V2S Production & Entertainment presents the film; the screenplay and dialogues are by Digangana Suryavanshi and Acharya. Music is by Junaid Kumar, with lyrics by Sameer Anjaan and Acharya. Ajay Pandey is the cinematographer and Rakesh Ram has handled the edit.
Why this film matters for Hindi cinema readers
Acharya’s name is woven into some of the most recognisable dance hits of the last two decades. Before the biopic arrives, the catalogue is the context:
- “Beedi Jalaile” in Omkara
- “Chikni Chameli” in Agneepath
- “Malhari” in Bajirao Mastani
- National Film Awards for “Hawan Kund” in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and “Gori Tu Lath Maar” in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha
He has also directed Swami and Money Hai Toh Honey Hai and has appeared as an actor. That makes this project an unusual mix: a living subject directing his own biopic and shaping the way his story is told.
The trailer’s endorsements
The trailer was shared on social media by Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn. Kumar, who has a long professional association with Acharya, wrote on Instagram that his friend’s first song as a choreographer was with him. “Master ji and I go back a long way,” Kumar posted, adding that the film is special because it is Acharya’s own story.
What to watch for
For readers who follow the craft closely, the trailer is a marker: it places a choreographer’s name above the title at a time when dance masters are often treated as behind-the-scenes craftspeople. The December 11 release will test whether a first-person choreographer biopic can draw audiences beyond the dance floor.
