Bradley Cooper (in his feature-directing debut) produced and directed A Star Is Born, a 2018 American musical romantic Western film with a screenplay by Cooper, Eric Roth, and Will Fetters.
Cooper, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay, and Sam Elliott star in the film, which follows a hard-drinking artist (Cooper) who falls in love with a young vocalist (Gaga). It is the story’s fifth cinematic adaptation, following the 1937 American musical, the 1954 American musical, the 1976 American musical, and the 2013 Indian musical.
In 2011, Clint Eastwood was attached to helm, and Beyoncé was supposed to act in a remake of the 1937 and 1954 versions of A Star Is Born. Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, and Tom Cruise were all approached to co-star in the picture, which was stuck in development hell for several years.
Cooper signed on to lead and direct the film in March 2016, and Lady Gaga joined the cast in August. In April 2017, principal photography began at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Cooper, Gaga, and Elliott’s performances, as well as Cooper’s direction, script, cinematography, and soundtrack, received critical and commercial acclaim, grossing over $436 million worldwide.
The film earned significant honors, including eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cooper), Best Actress (Gaga), and Best Supporting Actor (Elliott), as well as a win for Best Original Song for ‘Shallow.’ It also received five Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, and won Best Original Song for ‘Shallow’ at the 76th Golden Globe Awards.
