Enemy of the State is a 1998 American action thriller film directed by Tony Scott and written by David Marconi and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Will Smith and Gene Hackman star in the picture, which also features Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet, Gabriel Byrne, Dan Butler, Loren Dean, Jack Black, Jake Busey, Barry Pepper, and Regina King.
The movie portrays a group of National Security Agency (NSA) agents plotting to assassinate a congressman and the subsequent cover-up after a recording of the murder lands in the hands of an unwitting lawyer. Buena Vista Pictures’ adult film label Touchstone Pictures released the film on November 20, 1998, in the United States and overseas. Film critics and moviegoers praised Enemy of the State, with many applauding the narrative and direction, as well as the chemistry between Smith and Hackman.
The plot takes place in both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, and most of the filming took place there. The filming started on a ferry in Fell’s Point. The firm relocated to Los Angeles in mid-January to finish production in April 1998. Uncredited rewrites of the script were done by Aaron Sorkin, Henry Bean, and Tony Gilroy.
Enemy of the State grossed $111.5 million in the United States and $139.3 million in other markets, totaling $250.8 million worldwide on a $90 million production budget.
The picture debuted at #2, behind The Rugrats Movie, with a first-weekend gross of $20 million from 2,393 cinemas, an average of $8,374 per location. It earned $18.1 million in its second weekend and $9.7 million in its third weekend, placing third both times.
