Godfrey Reggio produced and directed Koyaanisqatsi, also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, a 1982 American experimental non-narrative film with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.

Fricke and Reggio decided to shoot an unscripted video and edit it into a one-hour film. In 1975, production began in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite the choice for 35 mm film, 16 mm film was used owing to economic constraints. Fricke nearly fainted out while capturing footage of the Pruitt–Igoe housing project from a helicopter, as he had never flown in one before.
On April 28, 1982, Koyaanisqatsi had its world debut at the Santa Fe Film Festival. It was shown at the Telluride Film Festival in August and the New York Film Festival in September of that year.
