Col Needham is the creator and CEO of IMDb, the world’s most popular movie website. Col was born and raised in the United Kingdom. He has always been fascinated by technology and cinema.
He began a career in technology research in Bristol, England, after launching a computer games software company at the age of 14. He went on to obtain a computer science degree at Leeds University before beginning a career in technology research.
Col built a personal database of movie information as a teenager, which he integrated with comparable material gathered on the Internet in the late 1980s and early 1990s to form IMDb. IMDb was founded in January 1996 with volunteers as shareholders, and in April 1998, it became a completely owned subsidiary of Amazon.com. Col is still working in his original function, operating from a Bristol office alongside IMDb staff members all around the world. Col is a member of the Into Film and Film Independent boards of directors.
For his efforts to assist indie films, he earned a 2014 Creative Coalition Independent Spotlight award. Col served on the juries of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, and the 2018 South by Southwest Film Festival.
