Caterina Scorsone is a Canadian-American actress who was born on October 16, 1981. She is best recognized for her role as Dr. Amelia Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy (2010–present), as well as its spin-offs Private Practice (2010–2013) and Station 19 (2018–present) on ABC.
She had previously made her acting debut as a child on the Canadian children’s show Mr. Dressup. She also appeared in other films, including Edge of Darkness (2010) and The November Man (2014). Jess Mastriani on Missing, Callie Wilkinson on Crash, and Alice Hamilton on Alice are among her other television roles.
Scorsone was born in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her family has five children, with her being the middle kid. Her mother, Suzanne Rozell Scorsone, is a social anthropologist, and her father, Antonio Bruno Scorsone, is a social worker. She has half-Italian ancestry.
Scorsone’s first television appearances were as a child on the Canadian children’s show Mr. Dressup, which he began at the age of eight. She played Amber, an alienated fifteen-year-old daughter who comes from Vancouver to reside with her mother for a school term in Toronto, in one episode of CBC Radio’s The Mystery Project named Peggy Delaney in 1998.
In June 2009, Scorsone married Rob Giles of The Rescues. Eliza (born July 6, 2012), Paloma Michaela “Pippa” (born November 8, 2016), and Arwen Lucinda “Lucky” are their three daughters (born December 13, 2019).
Her first pregnancy was shown in season 5 of Private Practice, her second pregnancy was not featured in Grey’s Anatomy, and her third pregnancy was featured in season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy.
Since the birth of her second daughter, Pippa, who was born with Down syndrome and other cognitive challenges, she has become an ardent advocate for children born with Down syndrome and other cognitive disabilities.
On November 14, 2020, she earned the Quincy Jones Exceptional Efforts Award from the Global Down Syndrome Foundation for her advocacy. In March 2020, Scorsone and Giles divorced. After ten years of marriage, they filed for divorce in May 2020.
