Which is the richest movie franchise?

With total worldwide box office earnings of 22.93 billion US dollars as of September 2021, the Marvel Cinematic Universe series was the highest-grossing movie franchise. With 2.8 billion dollars in global revenue, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) was Marvel’s highest-grossing film. Meanwhile, the franchise’s average revenue per film was 960 million dollars.

With worldwide box office revenues of 10.3 billion dollars and 9.2 billion dollars, the Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises came in second and third, respectively. In 2021, the global movie production and distribution industry is expected to generate 115.9 billion dollars in revenue.

    Harry Potter movie

The Star Wars film franchise began in the late 1970s and has captivated nerds and moviegoers alike ever since. The last film in the franchise, ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ was released immediately before the COVID-19 breakout and grossed over one billion dollars worldwide. This is nearly four times the amount spent on the film’s production. The franchise’s success extends beyond the domain of film.

In the first month after its release in October 2020, the video game Star Wars: Squadrons sold over one million digital downloads globally. While Star Wars has had its ups and downs, the Harry Potter franchise appears to be cursed with the release of its prequel series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ (2018) grossed less than $655 million globally at the box office. Since the Harry Potter franchise debuted on the big screen in 2001, this is the lowest-grossing film in the franchise. Its global box office is also roughly 20% lower than its predecessor, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016).
