Rajasthani cinema refers to films made in Rajasthan, India’s northwestern state. These films are made in a variety of regional and tribal languages, including Rajasthani dialects like Mewari, Marwari, and Hadoti, among others.
Nazrana, a Marwari film directed by G. P. Kapoor and premiered in 1942, was the first Rajasthani film. B. K. Adarsh’s Babasa Ri Ladli was released in 1961 and is regarded as the first successful Rajasthani film. The first Silver Jubilee film in Rajasthani was Jatinkumar Agarrwal’s Mhari Pyari Channana, released in 1983.
A number of Rajasthani films were made between 1987 and 1995, notably the 1988 musical Bai Chali Sasariye, which was said to be the sole successful Rajasthani-language film production in the 1980s and 1990s. The quantity of films produced in Rajasthan has been low since the mid-1990s, due to a lack of promotion and poor production quality.
To stimulate the development of Rajasthani films, the Rajasthani government declared a tax holiday for theatres in towns and cities with populations of less than 100,000 people in its 2008 budget, as well as a reduction in the entertainment tax.
B. K. Adarsh, Ram Raj Nahta, Bharat Nahta, Bhanu Prakash Rathi, and Ajai Chowdhary are among the Rajasthani film producers, while directors include Nawal Mathur of Jodhpur, Mohan Singh Rathor, Mohan Kataria, Ajit Singh, and Bhanu Prakash Rathi. Producers and directors include Neelu Vaghela, Gajendra S. Shrotriya, and Jatinkumar Agarwal.
