Happy Endings is a sitcom that aired on ABC from April 13, 2011, until May 3, 2013. The single-camera ensemble comedy debuted as a mid-season replacement with a one-hour premiere with two back-to-back episodes at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.
The show continued to air back-to-back episodes starting at 10 p.m. ET/PT in the weeks that followed. The sitcom was created by David Caspe, who acted as executive producer and showrunner alongside Jonathan Groff (formerly a showrunner on Scrubs).
The pilot episode, written by David Caspe and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, was greenlit by ABC on January 19, 2010. Sony Pictures Television, ABC Studios, and executive producer Jamie Tarses’ FanFare Productions are behind the show. Jamie Tarses, Jonathan Groff, and The Russo Brothers are executive producers.
On April 3, 2013, it was reported that Sony TV, the creators of Happy Endings, had approached a few networks about continuing the series if ABC decided to cancel it the next month, with the USA being the most probable network to do so. When ABC announced on May 10, 2013, that the show had been canceled, Sony TV was claimed to be marketing it around to other networks, with the USA still expressing interest.
On July 19, 2016, it was revealed that the cast of the program would rejoin for a live reading of a lost episode of the series at Entertainment Weekly’s EW PopFest in October 2016. The script would be newly written, and not an unused script from the program, it was shortly confirmed via Twitter.
The show’s second season began on September 28, 2011, and concluded on April 4, 2012. During the season, the show was moved to the 9:30 p.m. slot, which had previously been filled by Cougar Town. The show was then canceled to make way for Don’t Trust the B—— in Apartment 23 on the schedule.
The show’s third season began on October 23, 2012, and finished on May 3, 2013. The show was moved to a new timeslot for the season, this time Tuesday at 9 p.m., where it aired directly after Dancing with the Stars.
The series’ full episodes were initially available to stream on ABC.com and Hulu. While the show has been deleted from ABC.com, entire episodes are still accessible to stream on Hulu and purchase on digital shops.
