The Kerala High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli, actors Tamannaah Bhatia and Aju Varghese and the state government to ban online gambling in the state.
The three celebrities are the brand ambassadors of online rummy games. Puel Vadakan, who petitioned the court, alleged that online gambling is now a growing threat in the state and that the primary target would be among low-income people who would be tempted to earn easy money. He said that those who come for these “fraud platforms” often use their life savings.
The petition states that many celebrities, including Kohli, Bhatia and Varghese, attract their viewers with fake promises, while in fact the chances of such a win are none the less, thus fooling the unscrupulous people, They said.
The petitioner stated that Kerala Gaming Act 1960 does not bring any online gambling, gambling or betting activities under its purview. The petition seeks to impose sanctions or to regulate and monitor the game of online gambling, including games of its scope that are conducted online using electronic devices, including mobile phones, computers, laptops, and other communication devices.
