Mohalla Assi is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language satire comedy-drama film directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi and starring Sunny Deol.
The film is partially based on Dr. Kashi Nath Singh’s classic Hindi novel Kashi Ka Assi, a parody of the commercialization of pilgrimage cities and the use of bogus gurus to attract international tourists. The film is set in a famous and ancient ‘Mohalla’ beside the ghat, near the southern end of Banaras. Assi Ghat is a ghat in Varanasi (Banaras) on the banks of the Ganges River. The film, which also stars Ravi Kishen and Sakshi Tanwar, is set in the post-independence era.
Sunny Deol portrays a Sanskrit teacher and an orthodox religious priest (Pandit), and Sakshi Tanwar portrays his wife. The film’s plot follows the events of 1990 and 1989, including the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and the establishment of the Mandal Commission.
Mohalla Assi’s release was halted by a Delhi court on June 30, 2015, for allegedly injuring religious emotions. Mohalla Assi was ultimately released on November 16, 2018, after a long wait. On the first day, Mohalla Assi made roughly 0.30 crore. In India, the film grossed 1.49 crore in its first weekend. and 2.57cr over a lifetime.
