The Prom is a 2020 American musical comedy film directed by Ryan Murphy and based on Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin’s 2018 Broadway musical of the same name.

Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Ariana DeBose, Tracey Ullman, Kevin Chamberlin, Mary Kay Place, Kerry Washington, and Jo Ellen Pellman star in the picture, which also introduces Jo Ellen Pellman as Emma Nolan.

On December 4, 2020, The Prom had a limited theatrical release before being released on Netflix on December 11, 2020. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising the message, musical sequences, and cast performances while criticizing the plot and stereotypes.

The film follows the plot of the musical of the same name, which features music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin, all based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. The film is also partially inspired by the 2010 prom issue in the Itawamba County School District.

On December 4, 2020, The Prom had a limited theatrical premiere that qualified for awards consideration before being released online on December 11 by Netflix. It was the second-most-watched picture on the platform during its first weekend, before slipping to tenth place in its second week.

The film is based on the true story of Constance McMillen in Mississippi, albeit it takes certain liberties (the real girl probably didn’t get a dance-based pep talk from a Bob Fosse-obsessed chorus girl).
