Kitao Sakurai directs Bad Trip, a 2021 American hidden camera comedy film. The film follows two best friends (Eric André and Lil Rel Howery) on a road trip from Florida to New York City for one of them to declare his love for his high school crush (Michaela Conlin), all while being pursued by the other’s criminal sister (Tiffany Haddish), whose car they have stolen for the journey.
The film was set to premiere at South by Southwest on March 14, 2020, and to be released in theatres by Orion Pictures on April 17, 2020, however owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been postponed indefinitely. On April 17, it was unintentionally released on Amazon Prime Video, and it was pirated before it was officially released. The film was eventually purchased by Netflix. Netflix and United Artists Releasing launched it on March 26, 2021. The critical response to Bad Trip has been overwhelmingly good.
Chris (Eric Andre) is a lowlife who has spent his entire life doing odd jobs until he runs into his old crush Maria one lovely day (Played by Michaela Conlin). So he and his best friend, Bud (Lil Rel Howery), decide to travel to New York to visit Maria in her art gallery, where Chris will propose to her and make love to her. Trina (Tiffany Haddish), Bud’s nasty sister, is freaked out because the boys took their pink ‘Bad Bitch’ waggon to go to New York. And that’s pretty much all for the plot.
André attended Robert McKee’s narrative seminars and sought advice from Jeff Tremaine and Nathan Fielder while developing the film. André screened the picture for comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, a veteran of hidden camera prank shows and films, before it was released.
MGM announced in May 2020 that the picture has been sold to Netflix. The transaction was reportedly unaffected by the breach. On March 26, 2021, Netflix released the film.
