Drishyam 3 crosses Rs 509 cr worldwide in 13 days

Ajay Devgn and Tabu's thriller has grossed Rs 509 cr worldwide in 13 days, with India net at Rs 328.75 cr, as the director calls the franchise finished.

Drishyam 3 bows out past Rs 509 cr worldwide

After thirteen days in cinemas, Drishyam 3: The Conclusion has crossed Rs 509 crore in worldwide gross, while its India net collection stands at Rs 328.75 crore, according to Sacnilk figures cited by The Times of India.

The Ajay Devgn and Tabu thriller added Rs 5.25 crore net on Wednesday, October 14, across 14,717 shows. That is a 38.2% drop from Tuesday’s Rs 8.50 crore, a signal that the film has entered the slower second-week rhythm after a strong weekend.

The day-13 picture

Wednesday’s collections were led by night shows. The Hindi 2D version recorded an overall occupancy of 9.77%, with the day split unevenly:

  • Morning: 5.46%
  • Afternoon: 9.31%
  • Evening: 10.23%
  • Night: 12.77%

Sacnilk also reported 297,910 footfalls on day 13, taking the cumulative total to 13,928,413. The worldwide gross is split at Rs 394 crore from India and Rs 115 crore from overseas.

A franchise that says no to itself

The number matters less than the statement around it. Director Abhishek Pathak has ruled out a fourth instalment, calling Drishyam 3: The Conclusion the final chapter of Vijay Salgaonkar’s story. In an interview with SCREEN, he said he hopes October 2 will continue to be celebrated as Drishyam Day.

Pathak’s argument is a useful franchise principle: audience demand alone cannot determine whether a series should continue. A new film would need a convincing narrative reason to revisit the characters, not merely an opportunity to capitalise on the previous films’ success.

The film’s plot returns to Vijay Salgaonkar as a determined Crime Branch officer reopens the case. Alongside Devgn and Tabu, it stars Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Why the closure matters

Hindi cinema has rarely known when to stop with a successful franchise. A director publicly closing a series that is still earning is a notable counter-example. It positions Drishyam as a planned trilogy rather than a property to be stretched.

The opening week moved from Rs 62 crore on Friday to Rs 53.50 crore on Saturday and Rs 61 crore on Sunday, then cooled to Rs 21 crore on Monday, Rs 19.50 crore on Tuesday, Rs 15.50 crore on Wednesday and Rs 13 crore on Thursday, for a first-week net of Rs 245.50 crore. The second weekend recovered to Rs 14.50 crore, Rs 26.50 crore and Rs 22.50 crore before Monday’s Rs 6 crore and Tuesday’s Rs 8.50 crore led to day 13’s Rs 5.25 crore.

For followers of box-office reporting, day 13 works as a working-day checkpoint. The 38.2% drop is not alarming for a film already past Rs 300 crore net, but it shows the second-week floor being tested. The 9.77% occupancy also reflects a wide release: at 14,717 shows, occupancy dilutes even while absolute collections remain respectable.
