Drishyam 3 tops Drishyam 2, nears Tanhaji at Rs 245.50 cr

Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 has earned Rs 245.50 crore nett in India in a week, passing Drishyam 2's lifetime and closing on Tanhaji's record.

Drishyam 3: The Conclusion has not needed long to reorganise Ajay Devgn’s filmography. Seven days after release, the third Hindi instalment has passed the lifetime domestic business of Drishyam 2 and is now measuring itself against Devgn’s biggest India hit, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.

For readers who track franchise economics, the key line is not the opening but the first Thursday. A film that opens huge and collapses by midweek can still fall short of a predecessor’s lifetime; Drishyam 3 has instead passed that mark before the second weekend begins.

Where the first week landed

On its seventh day, the thriller added Rs 13 crore nett across 15,758 shows in India, according to trade figures in the report. That brings the domestic nett total to Rs 245.50 crore. The domestic gross stands at Rs 294.60 crore, and a Rs 4 crore overseas day has lifted the international gross to Rs 89 crore. Worldwide, the film has collected Rs 383.60 crore.

  • Pre-release sales: Rs 27 crore
  • Opening day: Rs 66.75 crore nett
  • Saturday: Rs 53.50 crore
  • Sunday: Rs 61 crore
  • Monday–Wednesday: Rs 21 crore, Rs 19.50 crore, Rs 15.50 crore

The opening day was the biggest of Devgn’s career and one of the biggest openings for a Hindi film.

The records it has crossed, and the one next

The immediate comparison is with the previous film. Drishyam 2 ended its domestic run at Rs 239.67 crore nett; Drishyam 3 overtook that figure within its first week. That is a useful measure of how the franchise has grown rather than merely repeated itself.

The next target is Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, the 2020 historical drama that remains Devgn’s highest-grossing film in India with Rs 279.59 crore nett. The gap is now a little under Rs 35 crore, which puts the record within reach if the second weekend holds.

What to watch from here

The shape of the week was conventional: a big weekend, then a working-day dip. What matters for the Tanhaji chase is whether Thursday’s Rs 13 crore is the floor. A stable second Friday and Saturday would make the milestone a matter of days rather than weeks. Overseas numbers will decide how far past Rs 400 crore worldwide the film eventually travels.

Directed by Abhishek Pathak and backed by Star Studio18 and Panorama Studios, the film brings back Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar with Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor, Ishita Dutta, Mrunal Jadhav and Kamlesh Sawant; Saurabh Shukla returns in a cameo.
