Drishyam 3’s Rs 62 Crore Day Beats the Threequel Jinx

Drishyam: The Conclusion opens at Rs 62 crore, the third-biggest Bollywood opening day, and joins a short list of Hindi threequels that actually worked.

Drishyam 3 Starts at Rs 62 Crore and Beats the Threequel Jinx

Drishyam: The Conclusion, the third Drishyam film, has opened at Rs 62 crore on its first day, according to early trade figures cited by MensXP. That makes it the third-biggest opening day for a Bollywood release and the fourth-biggest first day in Hindi cinema history. The film is now moving toward an opening weekend of more than Rs 180 crore.

The threequel record

Hindi cinema has not been kind to part three. Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 arrived after Pathaan’s record run but was judged a below-average performer, and the proposed Tiger vs Pathaan was shelved. Ajay Devgn’s own Singham Again ended as an average grosser in 2024. Dhoom 3 made enormous money in 2013 but is still widely seen as the weakest entry in the series, while Race 3, Dabangg 3, Housefull 3, Fukrey 3 and Krrish 3 each fell short with critics, audiences, or both.

Drishyam: The Conclusion now sits alongside the short list of Hindi threequels that delivered commercially and critically:

  • Golmaal 3 (2010): better reviews than the second part and a bigger blockbuster verdict.
  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024): won its Diwali clash against Singham Again and became a blockbuster.
  • Drishyam: The Conclusion (2026): a record opening day and strong early word of mouth.

Why the franchise works

Abhishek Pathak directs the ensemble, which returns Ajay Devgn with Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutt, Mrunal Jadhav, Kamlesh Sawant, Rajat Kapoor, Prakash Raj and Jaideep Ahlawat. The Drishyam films have always traded on a family’s concealment and Vijay Salgaonkar’s improvisation rather than scale, so the third part arrives with an unusual advantage: the central idea is still intact.

Most franchises lose their original conflict by the third instalment and try to replace it with bigger action or a new lead. Drishyam’s early result suggests audiences will still reward a third part that protects its core story and cast instead of inflating them.

What to watch next

The opening-weekend number will confirm whether the film is a front-loaded event or has staying power. The clearer test is the second Friday hold: if the movie keeps its theatres after the initial rush, it will strengthen the argument that a third part can be both a blockbuster and a respected continuation. For now, the record belongs to a franchise built on restraint, not reinvention.
