In March 2020, filming for Atrangi Re, a film directed by Aanand L Rai and starring Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan, and Dhanush, began in Varanasi. The crew resumed recording in Madurai in October 2020, backed by a program in Delhi.
Since then, the developers have decided on a digital distribution model. After much conjecture, they’ve opted to broadcast the film on Disney+ Hotstar. The announcement was made on November 23, 2021.
Meanwhile, the cast was revealed in advance by the directors. Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan, and Dhanush revealed the first glimpses at their respective characters. In a letter to Sara, he wrote, “Introducing Sara as Atrangi No. 1.” “Ek ladki…pyaar mein paagal. Miliye Atrangi No. 1 Rinku se kal.”
While introducing Dhanush as Atrangi No. 2, he tweeted, “Meet iss love tale ka Atrangi No.2, Naam jiska hai Vishu!” “An Atrangi fable about love’s craziness,” he said in introducing his persona. Yours truly is adding to the story’s charm!”
This will be Akshay Kumar’s second OTT release after Laxmi, Sara’s also second OTT release after Coolie No. 1, and Dhanush’s second OTT release after Jagame Thandhiram. Raksha Bandhan, Akshay’s next film with Aanand L Rai, will be released in theatres this year.
Atrangi Re is directed by Aanand L Rai and produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, Colour Yellow Productions, and Cape of Good Films. The screenplay was written by Himanshu Sharma. AR Rahman composed the film’s music, which included songs written by Irshad Kamil.
