Arun Govil is Dashrath in Ramayana, out 5 Nov 2026

Arun Govil, once synonymous with Lord Ram, returns as King Dashrath in Nitesh Tiwari's two-part Ramayana, ahead of its 5 November 2026 release.

Arun Govil is King Dashrath in Ramayana

The makers of Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part Ramayana have released a solo poster of Arun Govil as King Dashrath, the father of Lord Rama. The reveal works less as a new introduction than as a return: the actor remains closely identified with Ram, and now enters the story from the other side of the relationship.

From Ram to Dashrath

The poster places Govil in the regal avatar of Dashrath, with the detailing meant to convey the authority of the King of Ayodhya. The makers’ social media caption underlined the emotional arc: “He once brought Ram to life for a generation. Now, he returns to the world of Ramayana as the King of Ayodhya.”

For viewers who grew up with Govil as Ram, the poster is less a traditional character reveal than an act of recognition. The production is asking audiences to carry their own memory into the theatre, and that memory does part of the storytelling before the film begins.

The film around the reveal

  • Directed by Nitesh Tiwari; produced by Prime Focus Studios with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
  • Cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Arun Govil as King Dashrath.
  • Part 1 releases worldwide on 5 November 2026; Part 2 is set for Diwali 2027.
  • Releasing in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with an IMAX presentation.
  • Sony Pictures distributes globally outside India; Dharma Productions handles the Hindi-speaking market.

Why the casting lands

The announcement adds another layer to a film already conceived as a pan-Indian, two-part event. With Part 1 opening in IMAX and across five languages, the campaign’s challenge is to make a familiar epic feel distinct. Govil’s casting gives the ensemble a direct link to the screen image that Indian audiences know best: the actor associated with Ram now embodies Dashrath, the father whose decision sets the story in motion.

Distribution is being treated as a global event. Sony Pictures taking the film outside India, while Dharma Productions handles the Hindi-speaking circuit, acknowledges the epic’s double life: a multilingual domestic release and an international theatrical footprint. Part 2’s Diwali 2027 date, already announced, means the casting reveals and the five-language rollout can be spaced across two festival windows rather than compressed into one cycle.

The poster is one piece of a longer rollout, but its value may be in the conversation it recognises. The actor audiences saw as the son now plays the father, and the audience is invited to measure the distance.
