Anupam Kher’s Hindi Play Earns Official US Honours

The US tour of Jaane Pehchaane Anjane drew proclamations from North Carolina’s governor and two mayors, a rare formal bow for Hindi theatre.

Anupam Kher’s Hindi Play Collects Official US Honours

Anupam Kher usually says he does not keep a record of his achievements. This week, he paused that habit. After a US tour of his Hindi stage play Jaane Pehchaane Anjane, the actor shared recognition letters and a proclamation from North Carolina officials and said the tribute had genuinely stopped him.

“I have received proclamations, commendations and letters whose words have moved me more than I could have imagined,” Kher wrote on Instagram, adding that the tour had made him pause in a way he rarely allows himself.

Three civic honours

The documents carried the names of three elected leaders:

  • Josh Stein, Governor of North Carolina
  • Janet Cowell, Mayor of Raleigh
  • Harold Weinbrecht, Mayor of Cary

Kher thanked the three for recognising his work in cinema, theatre, education and humanitarian service. But he framed the moment as wider than a personal plaque. Above all, he said, the letters made him proud to be an Indian actor, because they showed Indian cinema and theatre being celebrated across borders.

Why a civic letter matters

A proclamation from a governor or mayor is a formal gesture. It does not add box office, but it gives a touring production an institutional welcome. For Hindi-language theatre, which usually sits far behind film in media attention, that is a meaningful signal: the play is being received as a cultural contribution, not just a commercial event.

Kher’s note also carried a familiar tension. Back home, he suggested, longevity can invite being taken for granted, “even at award functions.” The letters, by contrast, arrived as official recognition from outside the Indian film ecosystem.

The production behind the tour

Jaane Pehchaane Anjane is presented by Anupam Kher Studio and features Kher alongside actor Swaroop Sampat. Anu Malik has composed the music, which the production notes is his first score for a stage play.

The honours are not being treated as a destination. Kher closed by noting that he remains curious and that there is still much to do.
