Apsara Rani, known to regional audiences through her work in Odia, Telugu and Tamil cinema, makes her Hindi debut this week with Lohitaksha, a psychological thriller that asks her to leave a glamorous screen image behind. The film, written, directed and produced by Bhupindarra, releases theatrically on October 23.
A deliberate image break
In Lohitaksha, Rani plays a “bubbly, culturally rooted and responsible housewife” who is also a working professional. The character is devoted to her husband, played by Siddhant Issar, whose mental and emotional struggles push the marriage into darker territory. The husband-wife dynamic is central to the narrative.
To find the part, Rani put on weight and moved away from the polished look associated with her earlier appearances, including Ram Gopal Varma’s Thriller. That physical shift has become part of the film’s pitch: the trailer has already drawn curiosity, with viewers noting the transformation.
Why the debut matters
Regional actors entering Hindi cinema often carry a type. By choosing a non-glamorous, emotionally layered part as a first statement, Rani is asking to be read as a performer first. Director Bhupindarra contends the film will “reveal a new dimension of her talent” and could prove a breakthrough. In Hindi cinema’s longer memory, this is a familiar logic of the image break—an actor stepping deliberately against an established persona to widen the roles they are considered for.
That pivot matters because the Hindi film market remains crowded. A debut that signals range can earn a second look from producers, but only if the film itself supports the promise with a role that has enough scenes to test it.
A theatrical debut still carries a different weight from a streaming bow: it places the performance in a collective, big-screen conversation and asks the trade to read the opening as a signal. For a psychological thriller, the trailer has done its first job by turning the transformation into talk.

What to watch
For followers of Hindi cinema, Lohitaksha also fits a recurring pattern: the psychological thriller has given performers a space to try darker, less obviously star-driven material. The question is whether the love-story-with-grey-shades framing reaches the audience the trailer is targeting.
The film is positioned as a love story with grey shades, not only a thriller. Rani says the part is close to her heart and that she hopes it opens the door to more performance-oriented work in Hindi cinema. The commercial test is whether audiences who remember her from other industries accept the new register—and whether the release gives the debut enough runway.
