An interview with actor and spiritual healer Smita Jayakar has opened another window into Sushant Singh Rajput’s final months, six years after his death. Jayakar says she met the actor at Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital after Rhea Chakraborty reached out to her, and that a planned healing visit to her ashram never took place.
The hospital meeting
Jayakar told interviewer Siddharth Kannan that she and Chakraborty had earlier discussed spiritual healing while working together on the film Sonali Cable. When Sushant was admitted at Hinduja Hospital for treatment of depression, Chakraborty remembered that conversation and asked Jayakar to see him.
Jayakar said Sushant was warm and receptive during the meeting, and appeared happy. “At that point, he was probably under medication,” she said. The two discussed the possibility of him visiting her ashram for a healing process, and according to Jayakar, he seemed willing.
A plan that never materialised
The meeting did not lead to a follow-up. Jayakar recalled a message from Chakraborty the same night saying he was slipping again. The planned ashram visit never happened.
The sequence, as Jayakar describes it, is a small record of how support was being attempted privately before the actor’s death became a public crisis:
- Chakraborty contacted Jayakar because of a past conversation about healing.
- Jayakar visited Sushant at Hinduja Hospital and found him agreeable to a future process.
- The plan stalled after Chakraborty’s message that he was “dwindling again.”
Memory after the storm
Jayakar said she admired Sushant as an actor and recalled giving him “a nice, tight hug” at the hospital. After his death, she wondered whether staying in contact could have made a difference. She described her reaction as a question she keeps returning to: why he did not come to her again when she believed she could have helped.
She also spoke sympathetically about Chakraborty, who faced intense public scrutiny after allegations from Sushant’s family and multiple investigations. Jayakar called her “a very sweet girl” during their professional association and said she was the one trying to help Sushant at the time.
Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence in Mumbai on June 14, 2020, at the age of 34. His known films include Kai Po Che!, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Chhichhore; his final film, Dil Bechara, arrived after his death on July 24, 2020.
For Hindi cinema audiences, the interview is less a new disclosure than a reminder of how much private care was attempted around a public tragedy, and how little of it was visible when the story turned into a media storm.
