Jailer 2 tops 2026 Tamil box office with ₹321 crore

Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar's sequel has crossed ₹321 crore worldwide and overtaken Jana Nayagan and Karuppu to become 2026's top Tamil earner.

Jailer 2 tops 2026 Tamil box office with ₹321 crore

Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar have turned a sequel into the new benchmark for Tamil cinema in 2026. Four days after its October 15 release, Jailer 2 had enough momentum to overtake the year’s previous leaders and become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026.

The film had accumulated ₹321 crore gross worldwide by the end of Saturday, alongside roughly ₹145 crore net in India. Early Sunday figures reported by Sacnilk added another ₹21.60 crore net domestically, pushing India net collections past ₹165 crore before the day’s full run was complete. With overseas receipts included, the sequel moved ahead of the lifetime totals set earlier in the year.

Two 2026 leaders fall in one weekend

Until now, the Tamil leaderboard for 2026 belonged to two mid-year releases. Vijay and H Vinoth’s Jana Nayagan had held the top spot since July with ₹324.68 crore worldwide. Before that, RJ Balaji and Suriya’s Karuppu led after its June release with ₹310.12 crore. Jailer 2 needed only its opening weekend to make both totals look beatable.

The speed matters. A sequel passing lifetime totals in three days signals that Rajinikanth remains among the most dependable box office draws in the south, and that Nelson’s franchise has become a scheduling event rather than a routine title.

The next benchmark

The sequel is also closing in on the year’s biggest Telugu release. Ram Charan and Buchi Babu Sana’s Peddi has ₹341.90 crore worldwide, a figure that now appears within reach if weekday holds are steady.

The more demanding comparisons sit in Rajinikanth’s own filmography. The original Jailer finished at ₹604.74 crore worldwide in 2023, and Coolie, his previous release with Lokesh Kanagaraj, ended at ₹518 crore. Matching those numbers will depend on the second-week hold and how much of the overseas market has already been captured.

What the numbers mean

Box office reports often mix two measures. Gross worldwide refers to total ticket revenue before local entertainment tax adjustments, while net India captures the domestic share after those deductions. That is why the India net figure and the worldwide gross figure move at different scales.

  • ₹321 crore — worldwide gross by the end of Saturday.
  • ₹165 crore — domestic net crossed by Sunday morning.
  • ₹324.68 crore — Jana Nayagan‘s full lifetime worldwide.
  • ₹310.12 crore — Karuppu‘s full lifetime worldwide.
  • ₹341.90 crore — Peddi, this year’s top Telugu grosser, now near.
  • ₹604.74 crore — the first Jailer‘s lifetime worldwide.

The film itself

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the sequel brings back Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Rithvik in their roles. SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan join the cast, while Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff return for cameos. The plot returns to retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian as he confronts new figures from the idol-smuggling network and the family fallout connected to his son’s death.

Critics and early audiences have responded favourably, but the commercial story is still being written. The sequel has already outperformed this year’s Tamil competition; the question is whether it can climb past the franchise’s own ₹604.74 crore peak.
