Supreme Court Refuses to Stall Release of ‘Udaipur Files’, No Urgent Relief for Kanhaiya Lal Murder Accused

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday declined to urgently hear a plea seeking a stay on the release of the film Udaipur Files, which is based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli in Udaipur.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi said the petition, filed by accused Mohammed Javed, may be mentioned before the appropriate bench once the court reopens on July 14. The film, meanwhile, is set to release on July 11.

Javed’s counsel argued that the movie portrays a one-sided narrative aligned with the prosecution and could hamper his right to a fair trial.
However, the court did not find grounds for urgent relief.
