At the Jailer 2 Super Show, Rajinikanth turned a casting update into a story about friendship, legacy and a very specific on-screen boundary. Mithun Chakraborty, the Hindi cinema veteran who plays the antagonist in Nelson’s sequel, did not first say yes. According to Rajinikanth, Mithun did not want to take beatings from the superstar.
Rajinikanth recalled Mithun’s initial refusal as ‘Not a chance, I am not doing it.’
Such casting stories often remain private. By sharing this one on stage, Rajinikanth framed Mithun’s entry not as a routine villain casting but as a gesture between two actors whose history runs deep. The actor had publicly resisted the idea of being beaten on screen, and the film appears to have worked around that line.
The no-beat, no-shoot condition
The conversation shifted when the two actors met at the WAVES Summit. Mithun indicated he would consider Jailer 2 if Rajinikanth wanted him in it, but he attached a condition: ‘You should neither beat me up nor shoot me.’ Rajinikanth said he took the request to director Nelson, though he first assumed the condition was made in jest.
It was a small negotiation with a larger meaning. Mithun was not avoiding the film; he was setting terms for how a senior actor would be framed in a star-driven action drama. That framing matters when the villain’s job is often to lose to the hero.
A reunion with Hindi cinema history
For Bollywood Chronicle readers, Jailer 2 is more than a Tamil sequel. Rajinikanth and Mithun first worked together in Ramesh Sippy’s Hindi film Bhrashtachar (1989), and Rajinikanth later made a special appearance in the Bengali film Bhagya Debata (1995), headlined by Mithun. Their new collaboration is another reunion after a considerable gap.
Mithun made his Tamil debut with Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka (2015) but had not appeared in another Tamil film since. Jailer 2 therefore marks his return to that industry, this time opposite Rajinikanth. The project also brings three Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipients into one ensemble.
- Three Dadasaheb Phalke recipients: Rajinikanth, Mithun Chakraborty and Mohanlal.
- Returning cast: Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa.
- New additions: SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan, among others.
- Produced by Sun Pictures, with music by Anirudh Ravichander.
What to watch
Rajinikanth reprises the role of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer whose quiet life hides a formidable past. Jailer 2 opens in theatres worldwide on October 15. For followers of Hindi cinema, the film is an occasion to see Mithun return to Tamil cinema on his own terms, with a no-beat, no-shoot clause that reflects how carefully stardom is maintained across industries.
