Saiyami Kher is marking ten years in Hindi cinema not with a box-office ledger but with a different set of milestones: a debut that still matters to her, three Ironman 70.3 finishes, and a wish list that stretches from romantic comedies to a full Ironman.
In a Filmfare conversation reported this week, she looked back at Mirzya (2016), the film that introduced her but is often remembered for its commercial performance. Kher said a result is not in an actor’s control and that the film was “one of the best experiences of my life.” That, she argued, is its own form of success, alongside a decade-long friendship with Gulzar Sahab.
A decade measured differently
Kher named Amitabh Bachchan and Waheeda Rehman among the figures she would most like to share a frame with. Of Rehman she said, “I draw immense inspiration from her,” citing the veteran actor’s ability to remain true to herself at 86. The admiration is part of a broader point: she has spent a decade defining success through relationships and growth rather than weekend figures.
Kher also recalled her modelling years, when there was pressure to fit a prescribed body type, straight hair and fuller lips. Because she was secure in who she was, she navigated those expectations, and she sees the same advice still being handed to newcomers, though the shift has been small and gradual.
Endurance as a second record
Off screen, Saiyami Kher has become the first Indian female actor to compete in the Ironman 70.3 triathlon and has finished the event three times. Her racing calendar shows the same long-range thinking.
- Full marathon in Calcutta
- Half marathon in Mumbai in January
- Tata Ultra Marathon in February
- A full Ironman attempt around September
She had planned a full Ironman this year, but a shooting schedule left too little recovery time, so she raced the half-distance again. Meeting Milind Soman during a race in Italy, she pointed to his 35 years of quiet fitness as a benchmark, saying she hopes to be as fit at 50.
What she wants next
Kher said she wants to step outside her comfort zone with a romantic comedy or a comedy film. Her director wishlist includes Imtiaz Ali and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and among newer names, Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Chaubey. On the work slate are Pal Bhar Ke Liye, a Marathi film she hopes to begin by the end of the year, and an unannounced international project.
She also commented on Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, calling it “the biggest film India has ever seen,” and noted her admiration for Ranbir Kapoor.
As she enters her second decade, Kher’s story is a useful reminder that an actor’s career can be read through longevity, reinvention and endurance rather than any single opening weekend.
