Koffee With Karan has its opening guest for the farewell: Salman Khan. The first teaser for Season 9, released ahead of the October 14 premiere on JioHotstar, puts the actor alone on the couch and wastes little time signalling that the show’s last run will not play safe.
What the teaser shows
In the clip, Karan Johar frames the stakes directly: “This is the finale season so this can go anywhere,” he tells Salman. The actor’s reply, “Kahin bhi ja sakta hai” — it can go anywhere — keeps the door open for the kind of candid exchange the show has traded on for more than two decades.
Salman’s return is also a format change. He made his Koffee With Karan debut in Season 4 and appeared again for the 100th episode in Season 5 with brothers Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan. This time, he is the first guest and is seated solo.
Why the farewell matters
Karan Johar has called Season 9 the show’s last. In an emotional video shared in late September, he recalled pitching the idea to his father, producer Yash Johar, who was initially unconvinced: why would anyone pay Karan to chat with his friends when he did it every day? Yash Johar died on June 26, 2004, and the first episode was shot on August 16 that year.
The show began in 2004 and has survived changes in film promotion, the rise of streaming, and scores of viral moments. Its end date now makes each appearance a small piece of archive: who agrees to sit, what they say, and what Karan chooses to revisit will be read as a snapshot of the industry at the close of the format.
Over the seasons, Koffee With Karan became a fixture of Hindi film publicity and fan culture, while also drawing criticism. Karan has acknowledged both sides, noting in the video that he is “living with the word nepotism even today.” A final season changes the incentive: with no next season to protect, the show can either push guests further or become a carefully managed goodbye.
The confirmed details so far
- Season 9 premieres October 14 on JioHotstar, around Diwali.
- Salman Khan opens the season as a solo guest; his previous appearances included a family couch.
- The remaining guest list is unconfirmed, though reports name Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and younger actors from digital and South Indian film spaces.
For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: the premiere date is fixed, but everything beyond Salman is still speculation. Diwali timing gives the show a broad holiday window, but the first episode will have to do the work of proving that “anywhere” is more than a teaser line.
