JioHotstar has extended its global footprint into the Middle East and North Africa, using an exclusive partnership with regional streamer STARZPLAY rather than a standalone app. From launch, the service will sit inside the STARZPLAY app and website as a dedicated JioHotstar destination — the clearest signal yet that the platform wants scale in diaspora markets without waiting years to build local distribution from scratch.
The arrangement follows JioHotstar’s launches in the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore, and it puts the streamer in front of one of the largest South Asian audiences outside South Asia. For Hindi cinema, that matters: a platform that carries new films and shows at the moment of their India release keeps diaspora audiences inside the same cultural conversation, instead of leaving them to catch up months later.
What the STARZPLAY deal includes
Viewers in the region will get new JioHotstar Originals alongside their India releases, television content from JioStar TV channels, films and reality franchises. Audio tracks will be available in up to 10 languages. Among the early highlights are the upcoming season of Koffee with Karan and the ongoing season of Bigg Boss, carried across six languages.
The catalogue spans Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Bangla, among other languages, with a substantial Malayalam library aimed squarely at the region’s Malayali audience — a reminder that “Hindi cinema” in the diaspora increasingly means Indian-language cinema, not only Hindi-language titles.
- PLUS plan: AED 34.99 per month for the JioHotstar entertainment offering.
- MAX plan: AED 49.99 per month, adding STARZPLAY’s sports portfolio, including major sporting events and cricket.
Why MENA is the next market
Amit Malhotra, Head of International Business at JioStar, framed the move as a step toward making JioHotstar “a truly global streaming platform,” and called MENA “a crucial next market” because of its large South Asian diaspora and appetite for entertainment across languages. STARZPLAY CEO Maaz Sheikh argued that the next phase of streaming growth in the region will be shaped by platforms that bring the right brands together, so audiences do not have to navigate an increasingly fragmented market.
Cricket has already given STARZPLAY a long-standing relationship with South Asian viewers; the JioHotstar library is designed to extend that connection beyond live sport into the everyday entertainment households return to, Sheikh said.
The bundling lesson
Strategically, this is a classic bundling move: pair a high-affinity entertainment library with a live sport viewers already pay for, then price the combined tier just above the base plan. The AED 34.99 entry point lowers the trial barrier, while the AED 49.99 MAX tier captures the cricket fan who might otherwise drift away between matches. For marketing teams, the structure is a reminder that the entry price is only half the story; the bundle is where retention happens.
The launch was marked with a projection on the Burj Khalifa, and JioHotstar says its international presence now spans Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. The platform is also exploring AI-powered personalisation, conversational discovery, interactive entertainment and in-app commerce, tailoring its approach to each market.
