Luv Ranjan: Hindi cinema needs fresh actors every 6-7 years

Luv Ranjan is putting a fresh cast at the centre of his next film, Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar, which opens in Indian theatres on October 23, 2026. The director-producer, who is backing the film with Ankur Garg, says the industry’s reluctance to bet on unknown faces is short-sighted.

“How will new stars or directors be created if no one gives them a chance?” Ranjan asks. He says people took a chance on him when he knew no one in the city, and that the business has to pay that forward.

Six to eight months of auditions

The ensemble was not assembled casually. The team auditioned actors over six to eight months before locking the final cast, Ranjan says. Most of those chosen had some prior training. After casting, workshops led by the film’s director concentrated mainly on script readings.

Ranjan’s standard reply to those who question the choice of newcomers is blunt: “Why not?”

The actor-star divide

Ranjan says he tells newcomers to be clear about why they entered the industry. The crucial difference, in his view, is between pursuing acting as a craft and chasing stardom. Today’s performers have more exposure, more social media reach and more general awareness about casting and styling than actors did 15 to 30 years ago—but he believes they also face far more distractions.

A supply line more than a gamble

Ranjan’s larger argument is structural. Top stars now work differently than they did in the 1990s, when actors did multiple films a year. Today, he points out, a top star may make one film every year or two. Newcomers, in his telling, are not just a risk—they are the industry’s ability to keep producing.

  • Hindi cinema needs a fresh wave of actors every six to seven years, he argues.
  • Established stars can deliver a ₹50 crore opening or an ₹8 crore opening depending on the content.
  • A reliable pool of new actors lets more films get made as current stars age.

He does not argue that a famous face is worthless. He cites Pyaar Ka Punchnama, released 15 years ago, and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, released eight years ago, as films that worked without conventional superstar-led positioning. But he says stardom acts as a “massive amplifier”: the same good film with a superstar can turn into a record-breaking blockbuster.

The release will be a live test of Ranjan’s argument: whether a non-star cast can find an audience when star-led films compete for attention. His stated position is that good content finds its audience, while stardom magnifies success.

Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar, co-produced by Ranjan and Garg, will explore youth, love and relationships when it arrives in theatres on October 23, 2026.
