Pupil Is a Marathi drama film, written, directed and edited by Chaitanya Tamhane and produced by executive Oscar-winning director, Alfonso Quaron. The film was awarded the FIPRESCI International Critics Award (FIPRESCI, Federation Internacional de la Press for Cinematographer) and Best Screenplay Award at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. It was also screened at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was named the winner of the Amplify Voice Award.
Earlier this week, the film was nominated at the Film Independent Spirit Awards under the Best International Feature category. Pupil Soon Netflix and stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat, and Kiran Yagnopavit will be released in important roles.
Pupil It is the story of Sharad Nerulkar, who devoted his life to becoming an Indian classical music singer, who follows the traditions and discipline of the old masters, his master and his father. But as the years pass, Sharad begins to wonder if it is possible to achieve the excellence he is striving for. It is a journey of devotion, passion and absolutism in contemporary Mumbai.
Talking about his film, director Chaitanya Tamhane said, “The story of Pupil Came from my own pursuit of excellence and direction. It is about how many of us follow all the rules and yet, sometimes, find that something is missing. I was honored to have the opportunity to work with a creative genius (and my mentor) like Alfonso Quarone – who directed Roma and Gravity. And now, not only has Netflix acquired it to stream to a discerning global audience. I am truly grateful and humble that veterans of the global industry have found this film worthy. A large part of the research goes into making a film and as a filmmaker my purpose has always been to tell my story authentically within a theatrical framework. The audience also needs to bear the intellect and intuition of the audience to be able to invest in their story, whatever the cultural context. I am glad that this approach worked well for the disciple. “
